I’m not a fan of female vocalists. I’d say about 5% of my music collection features female vocals. I can’t stand shows like American Idol and The Voice. I like whiny singer-songwriters with weird, shitty, and grating voices. So a song with a pleasing female vocal lead has to be pretty damned special to catch my attention. And this song, dear readers, is pretty damned special.
I’ve been a huge Röyksopp fan for well over a decade now. I was all about the downtempo in the early 2000s. Röyksopp was the yin to my Air yang (Air Yang — now that’s a great fucking band name). Röyksopp has progressed over the years from a downtempo instrumental act, to an international act with club-ready stompers.
With this song the evolution isn’t showing any signs of stopping. This may be the most radio-ready piece of music they’ve produced to date, but it’s still firmly planted in Röyksopp’s downtempo roots. If anything, their pop sense and skill as musicians has grown stronger. Röyksopp and Susanne Sundfør’s amazing musicianship are on full display in this live recording.
Running To The Sea deserves to be a hit.
